I am asked this all the time, as many people have not heard of Bowen Therapy before.
Bowen is a light touch, clothing-on type of body work that “flips the re-set buttons” in your body to assist it in healing itself. It is kind of like re-booting your computer when it gets a glitch. Your body is designed for health, and Bowen helps it “remember.”
Bowen Therapy was developed in Australia in the 1950s and is named for Tom Bowen, its founder. It is currently practiced all over the world by thousands of practitioners who carry on his legacy of natural healing. Bowen benefits the entire body on every level—physical, emotional, energetic, and spiritual.
What Bowen is NOT:
Bowen is not like massage, acupressure, chiropractic, cranial sacral, reiki or any other modality you may have experienced before. It is very systematic and disciplined, yet those who excel in it are also very sensitive to the body and very intuitive in its practice.
What You Will Experience in a Session:
A typical Bowen session typically lasts about an hour, although it could be much less or much more depending on what an individual body needs at the time of treatment. You will be asked to lie down on a massage table and will remain fully clothed. You will experience a series of light touches on various places on your body, then given anywhere from 2 – 15 minutes to allow your body to integrate the treatment. The practitioner will often leave the room while your body processes. You will find yourself becoming increasingly relaxed as the session progresses. Many people become so relaxed they fall asleep. This is perfectly fine and one of many indicators that your body is responding to the treatment.
It is important to know that you are not “paying on the clock” with Bowen. The rate is the same whether you need a 15-minute session with 2 moves or a 2-hour session with 20. The practitioner is determining what your body needs at the time of treatment and doing more than your body requires will not be productive. It may even be counter-productive. Also, unlike a massage, you will not be touched all the time. The effectiveness of Bowen has a lot to do with the integrating “rests” and we will make the most of those.
What You Will Experience After a Session:
You will always be reminded of the “3 W’s” for Water, Walk and Wait
Water – Drink half your body weight in ounces of good pure water every day. Water will help your body detoxify and release.
Walk – Don’t sit around at your desk or on the sofa. Get up every 30 minutes and walk around to help your body integrate the treatment. Be kind to your body and do not over-exert yourself with heavy exercise for a few days. Easy, gentle walking is quite sufficient.
Wait – Refrain from extreme temperatures (hot showers, Jacuzzis, ice packs) and having other forms of bodywork performed such as massage or chiropractic for 7 days after your Bowen session. Give your body the time and space it needs without mixed messages to integrate the treatment. Your body will behave as if it is giving itself a Bowen session for 3 to 7 days after your visit, so let it go to work!
Your results will be greatly diminished if you ignore the 3 W’s and greatly enhanced if you embrace them.
After a session, there are a wide variety of “normal” responses. It depends greatly on the individual and what is going on with their body at the time. You may experience anything from “feeling the best I ever felt in my life” to “totally exhausted” to “having tremendous peace of mind” to “I couldn’t sleep”. Some conditions respond to Bowen with a “healing crisis” where it seems things have gotten worse before they get better. If you have any concerns, please communicate them to your Bowen practitioner. Also remember that whatever the pain or issue was that you showed up with required months or years to develop, so it is quite likely it will take a little time to resolve. (But not always!)
